I followed the advice in the XDA article and on the Device Registration page unfortunately the adb command didn't work… Recently Google decided all devices had to be certified (see also LineageOS : Google Play Certification) and I found out, by chance, that mine was no longer, although I'd still been receiving updates to many applications that had been installed through PlayStore and can't say I'd noticed that the Play Store itself, GMail, Google Maps etc.
